Butter Up Experiment

Materials Required:

  • Heavy Whipping cream (>30% fat content)
  • Clean mason jar or jam jar with lid
  • Strainer
  • Clean empty cup
  • Water and ice

Procedure

  • Fill half of the jar with the heavy whipping cream and close the lid. shake the jar vigorously for some minutes until it thickens.
  • Continue shaking vigorously  for 10 minutes until clumps of fat start forming and increase in size until all the liquid and fat are separated.(Figure 1)
  • Open the jar, strain the content into an empty cup. what is left in the container is butter. The liquid in the cup is buttermilk (Figure 2)
  • Place the butter in bowl containing ice and water.  Fold it and press it around the bowl a few times, replacing the water until it rinses clear.  Squeeze the butter to remove as much liquid as possible and store in the refrigerator or just spread it on a toast.
