1. INTRODUCTION

Over the past two decades, the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre (RGSC) has been a beacon of learning and discovery for the community. The wide range of activities and exhibitions developed by the Centre has undoubtedly inspired countless children and adults to explore the wonders of science and technology.

Hence, in the context of the 20th Anniversary, the RGSC would like to celebrate and recognise all the champions and role models who, in one way or another, have contributed to STEM advocacy in the Republic of Mauritius. For this first edition, only projects and initiatives implemented between January 2022 to December 2023 will be considered.

The STEM Excellence Award was launched on 30 November 2023 and will culminate in an Award Ceremony, which will be held in August 2024 to mark the 20th Anniversary of the opening of the Centre.

2. AIMS

The aims of the STEM Excellence Award are to:

  • Create STEM awareness among the public
  • Encourage a culture of STEM advocacy.
  • Acknowledge and honour the far-reaching contribution made by individuals and organisations in STEM.

3. Timeline

The STEM Excellence Award was launched in November 2023, and interested people will be invited to register.

Phase 1: Registration of Participants – 31 May 2024

Interested individuals/institutions should register by filling out the online registration form.

Phase 2: Workshop/Training of Participants – June 2024

A preliminary evaluation will be carried out, and the selected participants will be invited to attend a training workshop, where they will be briefed on the way forward, the assessment criteria and the format for project submission.

Phase 3: Submission of Final Project Report – July 2024

Selected candidates will be invited to submit an online project report. (A standard template will be provided.)

Phase 4: Selection of Finalists – June- July 2024

All the project reports will be assessed by an independent Jury Panel composed of researchers/academics/scientists/professionals from the industry.

Phase 5: Finals (Presentation of best projects) – August 2024

Five finalists in each category will be invited to make a 15-minute presentation.

Phase 6: Award Ceremony August 2024

An award ceremony will be held in August 2024 to reward the best projects.

 

 

4. Participation

Interested candidates can participate as individuals or in a Team (Max 4 persons per team) by duly filling out the online registration form.

Selected participants will be notified and invited to attend a training session to be briefed on the various deliverables and the way forward.

5. Who Can Participate

Individuals/Government Institutions/NGOs/Clubs/Associations/Private Companies who have demonstrated leadership and undertaken outstanding initiatives to promote or apply STEM for the betterment of Mauritian citizens. Participation is not limited to professionals from the education sector. Thus, participants can come from any field. However, the area of intervention should be in the following sectors.

  • Pre-Primary
  • Primary
  • Secondary
  • Vocational
  • Special Education Needs
  • Community

Thus, participants should ensure that their project has, in one way or the other, impacted the sectors listed above, and they should register their project under the appropriate sector.

6. Awards

Participants in each category will be awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards based on their achievements, which will be assessed by an independent Jury Panel.

Additionally, the most outstanding performers will receive a Trophy, and all participants will receive a certificate of participation.
