Mathematics lies at the heart of human progress — powering science, technology, economics, and social development. In Mauritius, cultivating mathematical thinking among young learners is crucial for building an innovative, knowledge-based society. The National Mathematics Contest 2026 (4th Edition) is being organised by the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre (RGSC) in collaboration with the High Commission of India and the Mauritius Institute of Education to inspire enthusiasm for mathematics through a combination of friendly competition, creative challenges, and real-world applications. This theme reflects the dynamic and evolving role of mathematics in solving real-world problems, from everyday decision-making to innovation, sustainability, and technology. The contest encourages students to explore mathematics not only as a subject but as a creative and essential tool for understanding and improving the world around them.
The 2026 edition comprises two components:
• A Mathematics Quiz and Problem Solving forGrade 9 students to develop general knowledge, reasoning and logical thinking and applications of mathematics.
• A Mathematical Challenge for Grade 12 students to apply mathematics to practical and societal contexts through teamwork and problem-based learning. Together, these components foster both individual analytical ability and collaborative creativity, strengthening the abilities of young mathematical thinkers in Mauritius.
The initiative promotes a positive and engaging image of mathematics while strengthening students’ logical reasoning, analytical skills, and creativity through inquiry-based and collaborative learning. It fosters teamwork and communication in problem-solving contexts and highlights mathematics as a dynamic tool for real-life application and innovation, not just an academic subject.
i. Mathematics Quiz and Problem Solving
• Reserved for students of Grade 9 or equivalent attending secondary schools in Mauritius.
• Individual participation, a maximum of 4 participants per school.
Registration by Head of School/Supervising Teacher at https://form.jotform.com/260551674533559 by latest: 22 May 2026.
Two rounds:
Preliminary Round: A multiple-choice quiz focusing on general mathematical knowledge, logical thinking, reasoning, and real-life applications.
Final Round: The top performers compete in a multiple-choice quiz featuring rapid-fire rounds and problem-solving challenges.
Preliminary and Final Round: 10 June 2026 (Tentative).
ii. Mathematical Challenge – Grade 12 (A maximum of 3 groups of 3 students)
• Reserved for students of Grade 12 or equivalent attending secondary schools in Mauritius.
• Group participation, a maximum of 3 participants per group. Maximum 3 groups per school.
This component focuses on creativity and the practical use of mathematics in addressing real-world problems.
It targets skills like: Modelling and analysis, collaboration and teamwork, problem-solving and communication of mathematical ideas. Teams of three students will:
• Receive a contextual problem related to matters pertaining to sustainability, innovation, or community challenges (e.g., renewable energy, transport optimisation, or environmental planning etc).
• Use a mathematical model and propose a solution supported by data, graphs, and reasoning.
• Present their findings in a concise report and give an oral presentation during the final event.
